Check where you shop
Merchant category codes determine many bonus rewards. A store selling groceries may not count as an eligible supermarket.
Track the cap
Estimate how much eligible spending receives the bonus rate and what earns the lower rate after a cap.
Include the costs
Consider annual fees and repayment costs. Avoid spending more just to earn cash back.
Cash back questions, answered.
Which cash back card is best for everyday spending?
Compare your actual spending, reward preferences, annual fees and repayment costs. This page covers seven selected cards rather than the entire market and does not assign a universal winner.
Should I choose a broad purchase rate or bonus categories?
Broad purchase rewards can be simpler. Category rewards may offer more on eligible spending, but check exclusions, activation and caps. Compare the return across your full spending pattern.
How do Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex differ?
Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5% on other purchases. Freedom Flex earns 1% on other purchases, with activated 5% quarterly bonus categories capped at $1,500 in combined spending per quarter. Both also offer selected higher ongoing category rewards.
Are the Amex $6,000 limits combined?
Blue Cash Everyday has a separate $6,000 annual eligible-spend cap for each of its three 3% categories. Blue Cash Preferred’s 6% U.S. supermarket rate is capped at $6,000 per year. Those capped categories earn 1% after the applicable cap.
Is Blue Cash Preferred’s first year always free?
Do not assume a first-year fee offer applies to every application route. This comparison shows its $95 ongoing annual fee. Review the current offer through the issuer link before applying.
Does Citi Double Cash pay 2% immediately on each purchase?
Its total purchase reward combines 1% when buying with another 1% as you pay. The payment component has separate requirements. Rewards are earned in ThankYou Points.
Do grocery rewards include every retailer selling food?
No. Merchant classification and issuer exclusions matter. Capital One Savor excludes superstores such as Walmart and Target from its grocery-store category. Read the Amex U.S. supermarket exclusions too.
Are cash back rewards always paid into a bank account?
No. Redemption options depend on the card. The Amex cards listed earn Reward Dollars redeemable as statement credits. Review each card’s redemption rules.
Does a $0 annual fee mean there are no costs?
No. Interest and transaction or other fees may apply. Read issuer pricing; interest charges can outweigh rewards.
Can I apply while living outside the United States?
These are U.S. card offerings. Each issuer sets residency, identification and other eligibility requirements, and approval is not guaranteed. Check directly before applying.
