Compare Personal Loans for Fair Credit
Your credit score is part of the picture. Compare options that fit your full financial profile.
Explore personal loans through Upstart’s lending partners or compare participating lenders with LendingTree. Check current requirements, then review the APR, fees and payment available to you.
A fair credit score does not guarantee approval. Income, existing debt, credit history and lender requirements also matter.
Two ways to compare fair credit loan options
Fair credit commonly refers to a FICO score of 580–669. Other scoring models and lender definitions can differ. The score used by a lender may also differ from the score shown in your monitoring app.
Personal loans through Upstart
A starting point for exploring loans that consider more than your credit score. Loans are made by Upstart’s lending partners; Upstart itself is not the lender.
- Credit history, income and other factors contribute to the lending decision.
- Initial rate checking uses a soft inquiry. Accepting a rate and continuing an application involves a hard inquiry.
- Check any origination fee, net proceeds and the partner lender’s agreement.
Eligibility note: Current Upstart guidance refers to underwriting-based credit requirements rather than publishing a universal numerical cutoff. Having fair credit does not establish eligibility.
Check options through Upstart ↗LendingTree Personal Loan Comparison
A starting point for exploring potential matches from participating personal loan lenders.
- Each matched lender has its own credit, income and state requirements.
- Compare only offers that fit your requested amount and intended loan purpose.
- Read credit-inquiry and contact consent details before submitting information.
Eligibility note: LendingTree has no single lender-wide approval threshold. A lender requiring a higher score than yours should be excluded from your shortlist unless its current rules provide another eligible route.

Current requirements: what to check first
A score range helps narrow a search, but lenders decide using the whole application. Check current rules before taking the next step.
| Requirement | Loans through Upstart | LendingTree matches |
|---|---|---|
| Credit score | Underwriting-based requirements; no universal numerical cutoff stated in the reviewed help article | Minimums differ by lender. Verify the actual matched lender’s rule |
| Income | A source of income, such as employment, an accepted job offer or another regular source | Income and verification requirements vary by lender |
| Identity and account | Age 18+, verifiable identity and Social Security number, U.S. residential address, personal U.S. bank account and email | Age, identity, residency and account rules depend on the lender |
| Debt and credit history | Debt-to-income ratio and credit history reviewed, including delinquencies, defaults, recent inquiries and bankruptcy history | Check the lender’s debt-to-income and adverse-credit restrictions |
| State and loan purpose | State availability, loan amounts and permitted uses must be checked | Keep only lenders serving your state and allowing your intended use |
This summarizes published requirements, not all underwriting rules. Requirements can change and meeting a minimum does not guarantee approval.
Income and affordability
Be ready to verify your income. Check whether the new payment fits after essential expenses and other commitments.
Existing debt
Your debt-to-income ratio compares monthly debt payments with gross monthly income. A fair score with substantial existing payments can still lead to a declined application.
Credit history and verification
Recent late payments, defaults or many applications may affect eligibility. Identity, residency and other verification checks also matter.
How to select potentially eligible offers
Use the provider’s rate-check or comparison process to gather potential options. Without your application details, we cannot determine which individual loans you qualify for.
- Confirm your score and report. Note the scoring model and check for errors. The lender may use a different bureau or model.
- Apply the lender’s current requirements. Remove options that exclude your state, require a score above yours, do not fit your income or debt profile, or do not permit your intended use.
- Check amount and net proceeds. Make sure the loan amount and repayment term fit your needs, including any fee deducted from the funds.
- Compare personalized estimates. Prioritize offers that meet your needs at an affordable payment and competitive total cost. Do not treat an advertised minimum rate as your rate.
- Verify before accepting. Review final lender disclosures, documentation requirements and the credit-inquiry consent. Prequalification can change after verification.
Example: If your lender-used score is 610 and a matched lender requires at least 620, that option does not pass the score screen under that rule. A different lender accepting 600 passes only that one screen; income, debt, state and the remaining requirements still need to be checked. These numbers are hypothetical, not provider requirements.
Compare costs before choosing a loan
| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| APR | Reflects interest and certain borrowing fees. Compare similar amounts and terms |
| Origination fee | Can add cost or reduce the cash you receive |
| Net proceeds | The funds available after any deducted fee should cover your actual need |
| Monthly payment | Must fit your budget throughout the repayment period |
| Term and total payments | A longer term can lower the payment while increasing total interest |
| Other conditions | Check discount rules, late fees, prepayment terms and any collateral requirements |
Illustrative fee calculation: A hypothetical $5,000 loan with a 5% origination fee deducted from proceeds gives you $4,750 in cash. You still repay the $5,000 principal plus interest under the agreement. This is not an offer from either service.
If the available offers do not fit your budget
Consider waiting, reducing the amount requested, checking a local credit union’s membership and loan criteria, or arranging a payment plan for the expense. If existing debt payments are already difficult to manage, a reputable nonprofit credit counselor may help you review alternatives.
Fair credit personal loan FAQs
What counts as fair credit?
On the common FICO scale, fair credit is 580–669. Other models and lender classifications differ. Always check which score and model a lender uses.
Can I get a personal loan with fair credit?
Possibly. Each lender sets requirements and evaluates the full application. Your income, existing obligations, credit history, requested amount and state availability can affect the decision.
Does Upstart guarantee approval for fair credit?
No. Its lending partners make approval decisions using underwriting requirements. The reviewed help guidance does not establish a universal numerical score cutoff. You still need to meet the applicable requirements.
Are all LendingTree offers suitable for fair credit?
No. Marketplace lenders have different requirements. Use your matched lender’s current criteria to screen an option; a marketplace listing alone does not establish eligibility.
Will checking rates affect my credit score?
Upstart’s initial rate check uses a soft inquiry that does not affect your score. Proceeding with an application after accepting a rate involves a hard inquiry. For LendingTree matches, check the consent language and confirm when each lender uses a soft or hard inquiry.
Is prequalification the same as approval?
No. A lender may still verify income, identity, credit and other information. Your terms or eligibility can change before a loan is approved and funded.
Can I add a cosigner or co-borrower?
Upstart’s current guidance says personal loan applications are based on individual credit and income, without a cosigner or co-borrower. Options through LendingTree depend on the matched lender; verify its rules before applying.
Should I accept the lowest monthly payment?
Compare the repayment term and total payments too. A smaller monthly payment spread over more years can cost more overall. Choose an affordable payment after reviewing the full loan cost.
Compare the options available to your full profile.
Check current requirements, explore your personalized options and compare the full cost before making a decision.
