What a transfer fee means in dollars
Illustration for a single $5,000 transfer, assuming the quoted fee applies and no other charges.
At a 3% fee
$150 transfer fee
$5,000 + $150 = $5,150 to repay.
At a 5% fee
$250 transfer fee
$5,000 + $250 = $5,250 to repay.
Compare the trade-off
The fee difference is $100. Consider it alongside the actual months remaining, your existing interest cost and the amount you can repay.
A rough payoff target is the transferred balance plus fee divided by the actual payment months remaining. This is not the issuer’s required minimum payment. Check statement dates and aim to finish before the promotional end date; delaying a transfer reduces the time available.
Make the transfer work with your plan
Check eligibility
Confirm the old creditor is eligible and that the approved credit limit covers the transfer plus its fee. A card approval does not guarantee transfer approval.
Allow processing time
Citi requires completion within its window. Wells Fargo’s terms specify a request deadline. Submit early and keep paying the old creditor until the transfer is confirmed.
Track the end date
Set payments around the remaining promotional period. Review ongoing APRs and the purchase rules before adding new spending to the card.
Balance transfer FAQs
Which balance transfer credit card is best?
Compare the transfer fee, qualifying deadline, introductory period and the payment you can afford. This page covers four selected cards rather than the whole market, and assigns no overall winner.
Does 0% APR mean the transfer is free?
No. A transfer fee applies to each card listed. Include that fee in your repayment target and check all pricing disclosures. A promotional interest rate does not erase the debt.
When does the introductory clock start?
For the published offers summarized here, it starts at account opening, not when you later transfer the balance. Delaying a transfer reduces the remaining promotional time.
Is four months the same as 120 days?
Not necessarily. Citi specifies completion within four months of account opening. Wells Fargo’s credit terms specify making the request within 120 days. Use the issuer’s exact dates and leave time for processing.
What happens after the introductory period?
A variable APR applies to remaining balances after the promotion. Review the current pricing disclosures for the rate available to you. Plan to repay before the promotional end date where possible.
Can I transfer debt between cards from the same issuer?
Restrictions apply. Wells Fargo prohibits transfers from its own accounts and affiliates. Check Citi’s application terms for its exclusions and confirm that your existing creditor and balance are eligible.
Do I need to keep paying my old card?
Continue required payments until the transfer is confirmed on both accounts. Processing is not instant, and a request may be declined or only partially fulfilled.
Can I earn rewards on a transferred balance?
Do not count purchase rewards as a benefit of transferring debt. Wells Fargo explicitly excludes balance transfers from rewards. Citi Simplicity and Diamond Preferred do not earn rewards.
Can I use the new card for purchases?
Check the separate purchase APR, promotional end date and grace-period rules. Diamond Preferred’s published purchase promotion is shorter than its transfer promotion. New purchases can complicate repayment and interest calculations.
Does no late fee on Simplicity mean I can skip a payment?
No. Minimum payments remain due. Missed payments can affect your credit and account status even when no late fee is charged.
Will I be approved for enough credit to transfer everything?
Approval and credit limits are determined by the issuer. Transfer fees also consume available credit. A request may be reduced or declined, so approval does not guarantee that all existing debt can be transferred.
Can the offer through an affiliate link differ?
Yes. Issuers state that offers may vary by marketing channel and date. Confirm the APR period, transfer deadline, fee and pricing on the exact application page you use.
Who are these offers intended for?
These are U.S. credit card offers subject to issuer eligibility and underwriting. Check residency, identification and credit requirements. This comparison is educational, not personalized debt advice.
