Make a careful start

Use the card within your student budget

Keep payments on time

Track due dates and check statements. If you use automatic payments, keep enough money in the payment account and confirm that each payment processes.

Manage the balance

Set a spending budget and aim to pay the statement balance in full when possible. You do not need to carry an interest-bearing balance to establish a repayment history.

Keep rewards in perspective

Earn on purchases you already need. Interest, fees or extra spending can outweigh cash back. Credit-building outcomes depend on several factors and are not guaranteed.

Before applying

Check the application requirements

Review age, student status, income, residency and identification requirements on the exact application page. Issuers may ask for enrollment evidence and consider credit information. Disclose income accurately and confirm what the issuer permits you to report. Approval and the credit limit offered are separate decisions from meeting basic eligibility.

These are U.S. card offerings. Check the current purchase APR, transaction fees and promotional conditions. Student cards are borrowing products, and missed payments can affect your credit.

Common questions

Student credit card FAQs

Which student credit card is best?

The right choice depends on normal spending, repayment habits and whether you want to manage reward categories. This page compares four selected cards and assigns no overall winner. Look at borrowing costs before rewards if you expect to carry a balance.

Do I need to be a student?

These offerings are designed for students. Capital One defines a student as someone currently enrolled, or admitted and planning to enroll within 3 months, at an accredited higher education institution. Discover’s eligibility guidance refers to enrollment in school. Confirm requirements on the exact application.

Is approval guaranteed if I have no credit history?

No. Discover advertises that no credit score is required to apply and may use scores if available. That is not a promise of approval. Issuers also consider income, eligibility and other application information.

What age and income requirements apply?

Student-card eligibility generally requires applicants to be at least 18 and to meet applicable income requirements. Check the issuer’s application instructions for your circumstances and report income accurately. Being enrolled does not by itself establish eligibility.

Do these cards charge an annual fee?

All four listed offerings advertise a $0 annual fee. Interest, late-payment, cash-advance, balance-transfer and other fees may still apply. Read the pricing disclosures.

How do the two Capital One student cards differ?

Savor Student has higher rates in selected categories and a lower base rate. Quicksilver Student offers 1.5% cash back across purchases. Compare those structures against purchases you already make.

Do I need to activate Discover Student Cash Back categories?

Yes. Its 5% quarterly categories require activation and are subject to a spending maximum. Check the current calendar and terms before relying on a category rate.

Does Discover Chrome require quarterly activation?

Its published 2% gas-and-restaurant rate applies automatically, with a shared $1,000 quarterly purchase cap. Purchases above that cap and other purchases earn 1%, subject to eligible transaction rules.

Can a student card help me build credit?

Responsible use may help establish a credit history, but no score increase is guaranteed. Make payments on time, keep balances manageable and monitor your statements. Late payments and excessive borrowing can harm your credit.

Should I carry a balance to build credit?

You do not need to pay interest to establish a history of card use and repayment. Review your payment terms and aim to pay the statement balance in full when possible. Interest can outweigh rewards.

What happens to the Capital One student card after graduation?

Capital One says its student card can stay with you after graduation with the same rewards and benefits. Continue to review account notices and current terms.

Are welcome bonuses and Cashback Match included in the comparison?

This comparison focuses on ongoing rewards and fees. Promotional offers have their own timing and eligibility conditions. Check the linked issuer page for any current bonus or match offer, and avoid treating a first-year promotion as an ongoing rate.

Can international students apply?

These are U.S. offerings. International students should confirm residency, identification, student-status and income requirements directly with the issuer. Enrollment at a school does not guarantee eligibility.

Will the card work for study abroad?

Check card acceptance, foreign transaction fees and other currency costs separately. The linked Capital One student offerings advertise no foreign transaction fees. No annual fee alone does not tell you the cost or acceptance of a card overseas.

Choose a card that fits your budget and habits

Compare the four options, then review eligibility and complete pricing on the issuer’s website.
