Best Personal Loans: Compare Rates, Fees, and Terms
Find a loan that fits your budget—not just an attractive headline rate.
Explore SoFi, personal loans through Upstart’s lending partners, and comparison options from Credible and LendingTree. Compare your actual APR, fees and repayment schedule before choosing.
Offers depend on eligibility, credit, income and state availability. Prequalification is not a guarantee of approval.
Four ways to explore personal loans
Use these starting points to gather offers. The order below is not a ranking. Compare the same amount and repayment term wherever possible, and check whether a credit inquiry is soft or hard before proceeding.
SoFi Personal Loans
A starting point if you want to explore a personal loan directly with SoFi.
- Initial rate checking uses a soft credit pull; continuing an application can involve a hard pull.
- Depending on eligibility, options may include no origination fee or a fee in exchange for a lower interest rate.
- Compare the actual APR, loan term and any conditions attached to rate discounts.
Before choosing: A lower interest rate with an origination fee may cost more overall. Compare both options if offered.
Check SoFi loan options ↗Personal loans through Upstart
Explore loans made by Upstart’s lending partners. Upstart itself is not the lender.
- The initial rate check uses a soft inquiry. Proceeding with an application after accepting a rate involves a hard inquiry.
- Underwriting considers factors such as education and employment alongside financial information; approval is not guaranteed.
- Check your origination fee and the cash you would actually receive.
Before choosing: Read the partner lender’s loan agreement, including any collateral requirements and fees.
Explore Upstart partner loans ↗Credible Personal Loan Comparison
A starting point for comparing personalized options from participating lenders.
- Initial rate checking through Credible does not affect your credit score.
- Compare offers by APR, repayment term and fees, rather than the lowest advertised rate.
- A chosen lender may conduct a hard credit inquiry during its formal application.
Before choosing: Marketplace results cover participating lenders. Prequalified terms can change after verification.
Compare loans with Credible ↗LendingTree Personal Loan Comparison
Explore personal loan options through LendingTree’s network of participating lenders.
- Use the marketplace to find potential matches for your borrowing needs.
- Review each lender’s APR, origination fee, monthly payment and total repayment.
- Check the credit-inquiry and contact consent details before submitting information.
Before choosing: LendingTree is a marketplace. The matched lender determines eligibility and final loan terms.

Compare the services at a glance
A lender and a comparison marketplace serve different roles. Your best next step depends on whether you want a direct offer, partner lender options or a broader comparison.
| Service | How you shop | Key comparison |
|---|---|---|
| SoFi | Explore a direct lender’s options | APR with and without an origination fee, when available |
| Upstart | Explore loans from lending partners | Partner lender, fee, net proceeds and agreement terms |
| Credible | Compare participating lenders | Matched offers, final terms and application requirements |
| LendingTree | Explore participating lender matches | Lender fees, inquiry disclosures and contact consent |
A marketplace is not a whole-market search. You may see the same lender through more than one service.
Compare the cost—not just the payment
APR versus interest rate
The interest rate measures the charge for borrowing. APR also reflects certain borrowing fees. Compare APRs for similar loan amounts and terms, then review total payments and fees separately.
Fees and cash received
An origination fee can reduce the cash paid to you. For example, a hypothetical $10,000 loan with a 5% fee deducted from proceeds provides $9,500, while the loan principal remains $10,000.
Term and total repayment
A longer term can reduce the monthly payment while increasing total interest. Choose a payment you can sustain, then compare how much you will repay over the full term.
| Repayment term | Monthly payment | Total repayment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 months | $332.14 | $11,957.15 | $1,957.15 |
| 60 months | $222.44 | $13,346.67 | $3,346.67 |
Hypothetical example, not a lender offer. Assumes equal monthly amortizing payments, no fees and no early repayment. Totals use unrounded payments; actual schedules may differ slightly.
The tradeoff: In this example, the longer term lowers the monthly payment by about $110 but adds about $1,390 in interest.
Choose your loan in three steps
1. Set your borrowing target
Decide how much cash you need and what monthly payment fits after essential expenses. Account for any fee deducted from the proceeds. Borrow only what you need.
2. Gather comparable offers
Start with soft-check options where available. Use the same amount and term, and compare APR, fees, net proceeds, payment and total repayment. Avoid unnecessary full applications.
3. Read the final agreement
Confirm the lender, permitted uses, due dates, discount conditions, late charges and early repayment rules. Check the final disclosures before accepting.
Consolidating debt? Compare the new loan’s full cost with your existing debts. A smaller payment alone does not establish savings. Avoid rebuilding balances on credit cards you have paid off.
Personal loan FAQs
Which personal loan is best for me?
The best fit is an eligible offer with affordable payments, competitive total cost and terms suited to your needs. Compare personalized offers rather than assuming an advertised starting rate will be available to you.
Will checking rates affect my credit score?
A soft inquiry does not affect your credit score. A hard inquiry can. SoFi, Upstart and Credible describe soft checks for initial rate checking; read the consent language before proceeding. Confirm the process with each lender, including lenders matched through LendingTree.
Does prequalification mean I am approved?
No. A lender may still verify income, identity, credit and other information. Your final rate, amount or eligibility can change, and approval is not guaranteed.
Should I choose a loan with no origination fee?
Compare the complete offer. A no-fee loan can have a higher interest rate; a fee-based loan can provide less cash or increase borrowing costs. Review APR, net proceeds and total repayment for the term you expect to keep the loan.
Are these all lenders?
No. SoFi offers personal loans directly. Loans through Upstart are made by its lending partners. Credible and LendingTree offer comparison marketplaces, and the selected lender makes the loan.
Can I use a personal loan for any purpose?
Permitted uses vary. Check the lender’s restrictions before applying, particularly for education, business expenses, investments or refinancing existing loans.
How should I compare early repayment options?
Check whether the loan agreement allows additional payments without penalties and how those payments are applied. If you expect to repay early, consider any upfront fees alongside the interest you would pay until payoff.
Start with an offer. Choose with the full picture.
Pick a starting point, check the terms available to you, and compare the total cost before accepting a loan.
